DHHE 629 Advocacy in Deaf Education This course focuses on an understanding of the deaf community’s long standing campaigns for inclusion, equity, and sign language rights from an advocacy perspective. Topics covered include the history and status of sign language in education, language planning, advocacy as a responsibility of the teacher of the deaf, as well as teaching advocacy strategies to students who are deaf and hard of hearing (and their parents). Advocacy is discussed through the role and responsibility of the teacher of the deaf and in contexts such as classroom/instructional planning, IEP writing and meetings, data collection, school-wide policy, parent support and interaction, and more. Credits: 3 Prerequisite: Acceptance to DHHE Program
