All persons wishing to enroll at WOU at the graduate level must be admitted to the university by the Office of Admissions and the academic program to which they have applied. Program admission requirements vary. Admission to the university for graduate level study requires:
- Completion of a four-year baccalaureate degree (or international equivalent) from a regionally accredited institution.
- A cumulative B average (equivalent 3.00 on a U.S. 4.00 grading scale) on the most recent baccalaureate degree.
- The cumulative GPA requirement may be waived if one of the following conditions is met:
- A 3.00 GPA is maintained over the final 60 semester hours (or 90 quarter hours) of the baccalaureate degree.
- A master’s degree has been successfully completed.
- Minimum GRE scores are achieved: 148 Verbal Reasoning, 147 Quantitative Reasoning, and 3.5 Analytical Writing.
Official transcripts from all degree-granting institutions must be submitted prior to enrollment. Western Oregon University (WOU) reserves the right to require official transcripts at any point during the application process. WOU further reserves the right to rescind admission if the reported educational history is found to be incomplete or below minimum admission standards. All admissions documents become the property of the university and will not be returned.
Graduate applicants may be admitted under the following categories:
Full Admission
Applicants who meet all institutional and program-specific admission requirements are granted full admission status.
Provisional Admission
Applicants who are expected to meet all admission requirements but have outstanding items at the time of admission may be granted provisional admission. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Pending receipt of a final official transcript verifying degree completion
- Completion of prerequisite coursework prior to matriculation
All required materials and conditions must be satisfied prior to the start of the student’s first term of enrollment. Failure to do so may result in the rescission of the admission offer.
Conditional Admission
Applicants who do not meet the minimum academic requirements for admission may be considered for conditional admission. Students in conditional admission status are not eligible for federal financial aid until they have met all conditions and are granted full admission.
In addition to any outstanding provisional admission requirements (i.e. an official transcript), conditionally admitted students must also complete their first 9 or more credits of graduate-level coursework at WOU with a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be eligible for full admission. Upon successful completion of these requirements, students may be formally admitted to their graduate program. Students who do not meet these requirements will not be eligible for full admission and will not be permitted to continue in the program.
All non-native English speaking students must also provide proof of proficiency in the English language by submitting an official copy of an English testing score report. The following minimum scores are required from one of the below-listed methods:
- Paper-based TOEFL: 550
- Internet-based TOEFL: 79
- IELTS Test: 6.0
- Duolingo: 100
A student seeking a master’s degree, graduate license program, graduate certificate or graduate specialization must apply both to the university and to the program in which they are interested. Applications to each specific program are available from each program. The graduate website and the catalog have current admission information.
